British artist Mat Chivers was born in Bristol, UK in 1973 and studied sculpture at The Nottingham Trent University, UK and Escuela de Belles Arte, Barcelona, Spain from 1993-96. An extended period of travel followed, where he trained in sustainable farming and building practices in Europe, culminating in a solo journey overland to India where he spent time living in the Himalayas. He returned to the UK in 1999 and established a studio in the south west of England. He lives between Totnes, UK and Montréal, Canada

Mat Chivers looks at some of the fundamental phenomena that drive our thoughts and actions. His practice in sculpture, drawing, film and performance often involves close collaborations with individuals and institutions in the fields of science, technology and academia. He explores ideas relating to evolutionary processes, ecology and ethics by bringing traditional analogue approaches to making into counterpoint with state-of-the-art digital technologies. Chivers work is often based on a response to place, to articulate some of the wider relationships that we all share and on which we all depend

He has works in private and public collections internationally including Oxford University Mathematical Institute, UK and Fondazione Henraux, Italy

Time At Hogchester Arts

Residency period - Jan/Feb 2022

"Walking the tideline on the fossilised ammonite pavement near Lyme Regis in crisp winter sunshine on the first day of our January residency set the tone for the following two weeks. As we navigated boulders studded with the spiralling memories of these gigantic molluscs, we ambled through time, space and some big ideas

Being in residency at Hogchester came at the right moment. After the past couple of years dogged by the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic it was a breath of fresh air to be thrown into a dynamic in-real-life dialogue with co-resident Thom and Hogchester residency founder Chantal. From the ever-changing light over the ocean sparkling at the end of the lush valley in which Hogchester is situated, to no-strings-attached experimentation in the luminous and spacious studios - the Hogchester Arts Residency offers a welcome environment for exchange, reflection and action

Thank you for an amazing couple of weeks - the ripples are still spreading out "
